About Stromm

Stromm are Ross Mitson (vocals/guitar/keyboards), Claire Kidman (vocals), Kate Ross (bass) and Stuart Paterson (drums).  They write and perform music with an emphasis on songwriting.  Their sound is a satisfying brew of exquisite harmonies, catchy melodies and witty, sometimes dark lyrics.
‘Stromm are class, and appeared slightly out of nowhere as all good things do. Poppy, but with a slight baroque darkness in the mix.’  Chad Mason, Co-host Jurnets Music House Acoustic-ish Sessions.

Arthur

Arthur is a fiery and energetic trio from Norwich featuring Simon Youngman (saxophone), Ben Higham (tuba) and Geoff Charlton (drums).

Initially inspired by the saxophonist Arthur Blythes trio of the same line-up, they now play pieces by jazz composers such as Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols, original pieces and improvisations. They have recently recorded a piece for the ‘NOAM’ album, for writer and thinker Noam Chomsky.

Arthur has performed twice at the Vortex Jazz Club, at Existential Antics (a concert series curated by Ben Higham) and at various venues around Norfolk.

Groovapolitan @ Market Place
Jun 24 @ 11:00 – 13:00

Groovapolitan was formed when bass player Dario Salvi and drummer Chris Griggs got together to recreate the magic sound of the Meters. After a couple of years of gigging in the region and some personnel changes the band moved towards a more commercial sound.

Band members:
Dario Salvi – bass guitar and vocals. Dario has played all over Europe and the USA with his own bands and as backing musician. He plays his funky bass like few others!
James Porter – guitars. James is a very busy guitar teacher with an amazing musical background. His funky guitar is one of the core elements of Groovapolitan’s sound.
Hannah Salvi – trombone and more. Hannah’s musical background included graduating with a Music Production degree as well as performing in many bands and orchestra. Her trombone covers what other bands would use a full brass section to play.
Clare Durrant – vocals. Clare is the voice of the groove. Classically trained and a singing teacher Clare’s musicality and soulfulness brings warmth to the slick sound of the band.
Matt Furness – drums. The latest addition to the band. Matt is a very young musical talent and a very busy musician in the region. His bass drums will keep dancers going all night long.

Black Voices

is an all-female a cappella collective.

www.blackvoices.co.uk/video

Formed in 1987 Black Voices has gained a reputation as Europe’s finest female a cappella quintet.

For over 25 years the ensemble has captivated global audiences with their singing and performances in the black oral tradition – an early music form that is based on the ancient folklores and story telling of Africa and the Diaspora and which has impacted on the development of classical and more recent music genres such as blues and jazz.

Drawing inspiration from that rich tradition, Black Voices has developed a unique repertoire and arrangement of spirituals, traditional African, Caribbean and English folk songs, jazz, gospel, pop and reggae as well as a fusion of contemporary and classical styles that has earned them world wide recognition as a performance and teaching company.

Jazz at the Abbey: Jo Fooks Quartet @ Wymondham Abbey, Church Street
Jul 6 @ 19:30

Jo Fooks Quartet

Jo Fooks – Sax

Ted Beaumant – Piano  (pianist in the Humphrey Lyttelton band)

Val Manix – Bass

Bobby Worth – Drums

“It led me to invite Jo Fooks into my band…I can report that in the year and-
a-half that has elapsed since then, she has developed further into a bright
star. I make no apology for singing her praises here. A brilliantly inventive player
and composer…”
Humphrey Lyttelton on BBC Radio 2 Best of Jazz

“Wow, was I in for a surprise. First Jo’s sound on tenor. Full and mellifluous with a sound that had distinct touches of the late great Zoot Sims. Both her lower and upper
registers were full and round and projected beautifully even without a microphone…
the enthusiastic crowd demanded two encores… All in all an excellent evening of
excellent jazz, with the musicians seemingly enjoying it as much as the audience.”

Luca Luciano in Concert @ Wymondham Abbey, Church Street
Jul 12 @ 19:30

Luca Luciano – clarinet  with piano accompaniment

Contemporary clarinet recital featuring original material from Luca Luciano’s last releases, along with classics by Gershwin, Weill and Piazzolla.

“Such a virtuoso musical performance and such joyful uplifting music I just couldn’t resist it.” Tom Robinson, BBC Radio, 2009

Internationally recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to contemporary clarinet music, praised by Musical Opinion (UK’s oldest classical music magazine) for his “constantly beautiful tone”, he started his career at a very young age and has since “established himself as the friendly face of contemporary clarinet”, according to the Clarinet & Saxophone Magazine.

His work has been described as “romantic, soulful and technically superb” and, with a repertoire that embraces more than two centuries of Western music, Luca is considered one of the most versatile musicians of his generation. Luciano has presented new works (either his compositions or music especially written/arranged for him) and rarely played music at some of the most established venues of the UK, Europe and America. He is mainly active as a solo artist presenting original projects via concerts/recitals and his experience includes TV and radio performances, master-classes and lecture-recitals, five solo albums, orchestra and chamber music.

The Band’s debut album “BLUE THRASH THERAPY” was released way back in 1997 and quickly sold out leading to several re-releases. The follow up “LANGUAGE OF YOUR SOUL” was released in 2000 and immediately recieved airplay on Paul Jones’ jazz fm show “Jazz Me Blues” ..”LIVE THERAPY” the bands first live album was released in 2003 as was the Studio album “TRIBUTE TO FAST” a celebration of the songwriting artistry of Robins old friend Brian Holmes. 2006 saw the release of Robin’s acoustic solo album “FAST LIFE SONGS” which has also received critical acclaim and continues to sell well. 2009 saw the release of the bands second Live album “SWITCH ON THE LIVE” a powerful high energy album capturing the band at its most passionate, exciting and dynamic moments with some inspired musicianship. An Acoustic Live Album “FAST DREAMS COME ALIVE” recorded at the Bulls Head Barnes was released in 2010…”LIVE AT THE OVAL” , a limited edition album featuring Robin and ALAN GLEN, one of the UK’s very finest harmomica players (Ex YARDBIRDS, NINE BELOW ZERO) followed soon after…But the best is yet to come!

Acoustic Night – Chris Dowding (solo), The Happy Couple, Joey Herzfeld Trio @ Green Dragon, Church Street
Jul 14 @ 20:00

Joey Herzfeld Trio. photograph Richard Shashamane

Chris Dowding (solo), The Happy Couple, Joey Herzfeld Trio

We are happy to present three new bands and projects from around Norwich.

Chris Dowding (solo) will be performing a short solo trumpet piece with electronics. This piece is called ‘Piano Angel’, and is dedicated to the New York pianist Craig Taborn.

Chris Dowding is a trumpeter and workshop leader based in Norwich. He performs with the bands Natural Causes (www.naturalcauses.org.uk), Rude 2.0 (with the trombonist Annie Whitehead), and leads the Moonrise Trio.

He has performed at Dartington, Marsden Jazz Festival, and performs regularly at the Vortex Jazz Club in London. He is working on a debut solo album, called ‘This Love’, which will hopefully be released in November 2017.

 www.chris-dowding.co.uk

The Happy Couple are Judith Goodman on assorted obscure string instruments and David Ross on Jews Harp and Mouthbow. They truly are a happy couple, who first met on the bus replacement service from Mile End Tube station to Leyton 23 years ago.

The pair recently moved from East London to live by a nature reserve in South Norfolk where they like to spend much of their time, weather permitting, playing music to the birds and trees. They have performed previously around Norfolk at Jurnets Bar and the York Tavern, both in Norwich.

 www.happycoupleisland.co.uk

The Joey Herzfeld Trio are a new trio from Norwich, playing the songs of Joey Herzfeld. The line-up is: Joey Herzfeld (accordion & vocals), Chris Dowding (trumpet), George McKay (double bass).

All three members of the band moved (in some cases back) to Norfolk within the last few years. Joey moved from London to Norfolk in 2016, and led several bands performing his own songs, in London, including his bands Hooverville and Joey Herzfeld and his So-Called Friends.

This trio came together in late 2016, and is an energetic trio featuring Joeys dark and comic lyrics, Georges propulsive double bass playing, and Chris’ trumpet playing. They have performed several times at both Jurnets Bar and Cactus Cafe in Norwich.
