some things

some things is an ‘arresting trumpet duo’ from Norwich. They explore a wide range of original and other material as a basis for improvisation.

some things have performed at Beyond Our Kennel (the poet John Hegleys night in London), were in residence at the Vortex Downstairs during the London Jazz Festival, and more recently were part of The Triple Bill Tour, a short Arts Council-funded UK tour featuring the three bands you will hear today.

some things have also performed at various venues around Norfolk. They are currently recording their debut album. They are: Chris Dowding (trumpet & flugelhorn) and Ben Higham (trumpet & flugelhorn).

Arthur is a fiery and energetic trio from Norwich featuring Simon Youngman (saxophone), Ben Higham (tuba) and Geoff Charlton (drums).

Initially inspired by the saxophonist Arthur Blythes trio of the same line-up, they now play pieces by jazz composers such as Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols, original pieces and improvisations. They have recently recorded a piece for the ‘NOAM’ album, for writer and thinker Noam Chomsky.

Arthur has performed twice at the Vortex Jazz Club, at Existential Antics (a concert series curated by Ben Higham) and at various venues around Norfolk.

The Brass Monkeys

They formed the climax of The Triple Bill Tour, a recent UK tour of these three bands. They have also performed at the Magdalen Street Celebration and Existential Antics (both in Norwich). They feature soloists Chris Dowding, Simon Youngman and Dave Amis, all supported and energised by Ben Highams tuba playing.

Black Voices @ Central Hall, Back Lane
Jun 30 @ 19:30

Black Voices

is an all-female a cappella collective.

Formed in 1987 Black Voices has gained a reputation as Europe’s finest female a cappella quintet.

For over 25 years the ensemble has captivated global audiences with their singing and performances in the black oral tradition – an early music form that is based on the ancient folklores and story telling of Africa and the Diaspora and which has impacted on the development of classical and more recent music genres such as blues and jazz.

Drawing inspiration from that rich tradition, Black Voices has developed a unique repertoire and arrangement of spirituals, traditional African, Caribbean and English folk songs, jazz, gospel, pop and reggae as well as a fusion of contemporary and classical styles that has earned them world wide recognition as a performance and teaching company.

Jazz at the Abbey: Jo Fooks Quartet @ Wymondham Abbey, Church Street
Jul 6 @ 19:30

Jo Fooks Quartet

Jo Fooks – Sax

Ted Beaumant – Piano  (pianist in the Humphrey Lyttelton band)

Val Manix – Bass

Bobby Worth – Drums

“It led me to invite Jo Fooks into my band…I can report that in the year and-
a-half that has elapsed since then, she has developed further into a bright
star. I make no apology for singing her praises here. A brilliantly inventive player
and composer…”
Humphrey Lyttelton on BBC Radio 2 Best of Jazz

“Wow, was I in for a surprise. First Jo’s sound on tenor. Full and mellifluous with a sound that had distinct touches of the late great Zoot Sims. Both her lower and upper
registers were full and round and projected beautifully even without a microphone…
the enthusiastic crowd demanded two encores… All in all an excellent evening of
excellent jazz, with the musicians seemingly enjoying it as much as the audience.”
