Overture Der Freischütz – Carl Maria von Weber
Cello Concerto in E minor – Edward Elgar with Andrew Harsley, cello (Norfolk young Musician of the Year 2016)
Symphony No.1 in D minor – Antonin Dvořák

In the first half of the 19th century, Weber’s opera Der Freischütz was a runaway success, and, to this day, its overture is the composer’s most famous work. Equally famous is the Cello Concerto by Elgar. During World War I, Elgar was appalled by the suffering caused and composed very little. Then he poured his feelings into works which ranked among his finest, including the cello concerto. WSO is delighted to support young local talent by inviting Andrew Harsley to be the soloist. In 1884, the Philharmonic Society of London invited Dvořák to write a new symphony. Although his New World Symphony is the most popular, the 7th Symphony is arguably the greatest one.
