This year’s Summer Pizzazz concert, as part of Wymondham Music Festival, features three duos – Sylvia & I, Tubonetics, and The Happy Couple.
This event will be an album launch for Sylvia & I, this year’s headliners. This is the duo of Sylvia Hallett (violin, voice, bicycle wheel, saw & electronics) and Chris Dowding (trumpet, piccolo trumpet, flugelhorn & electronics). This gig launches their debut album as the duo Sylvia & I – ‘the holding breath’.
The duo combines overlapping loops with dreamy soundscapes. Between them, Chris and Sylvia have performed with trombonist Annie Whitehead, saxophonist Evan Parker, and shakuhachi improviser Clive Bell. They have performed previously at Flimflam and The Klinker (both improvised music events in London), and the York Tavern (Norwich).
Tubonetics is the duo of trombonist Dave Amis and tuba player Ben Higham. Ben and Dave play in several different ensembles together, including The Brass Monkeys and The Hard Edges of Metal. They create a space where melodic science meets the velvety dark arts of big brass. The trombone and tuba play jazz that teases the audience in a pleasingly open harmonic space.
The Happy Couple is the duo of Judith Goodman (stringed instruments) and David Ross (jaw harp and mouth bow). They perform instrumental pieces often inspired by the outdoors locations in which they play and write their pieces. They first met on the bus replacement service from Mile End Tube station to Leyton 18 years ago, and are now based in Surlingham, Norfolk.
This concert is supported by Norfolk County Council’s Arts Project Fund.
